Landmark Movie Theater Closes

The York Beach Cinema closed Saturday night after 78 years in business. The building in which it's housed was first a horse barn, then an ice house. In 1913 it became an opera house when owners Don and John Holland laid down driftwood flooring, built a stage, and installed wood and wrought-iron seats.
Marjorie Donnellan, who calls herself "the oldest timer in York Beach" at age 85, has been summering in a cottage there since she was a child. She was just 7 years old when the theater showed its first flick, in 1928.

Donnellan couldn't remember the title, but a ticket, she recalled, cost just 10 cents. "This was quite a place, you know," she said. "It was very nice inside. It was really very nice just up until the last few years." [Link]
