World-Record Canoe Launched in Newport

Students at Nokomis Regional High School built a canoe 149 feet long, and succeeded in paddling it on Sebasticook Lake last Saturday. Despite breaking in two before reaching the dock, it should set a new Guinness World Record.
Students in [Howard] Whitten's honors science research class began the project as a way to pay for construction of a specially equipped pontoon boat for handicapped sports enthusiasts.

The boat, once completed, will have swivels on the floor that will allow wheelchairs to be locked in for safety but able to rotate so passengers can see scenery and fish. [Link]
