Peaks Island Votes to Secede

Residents of Peaks Island voted Tuesday to secede from the City of Portland—the first step to becoming an independent town.
The final tally on Peaks Island was 393-290 in unofficial returns. Portland City Clerk Linda Cohen said nearly 70 percent of eligible voters on the island cast ballots. That compares to 11 percent overall in the city.

The secession effort started as a revolt against high taxes that secession proponents said threaten the future of the island, which has 900 year-round residents. [Link]
