Water Will Still Be Free in Maine

The petition drive to tax water extracted in Maine by companies like Poland Spring has failed.
Monday, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap ruled that the campaign had failed to file sufficient signatures.

Dunlap said more than 7,100 of the 56,287 submitted signatures were determined to be invalid.

The secretary of state said the petitions contained 49,100 valid signatures. Citizen initiative organizers needed to obtain at least 50,519 signatures to guarantee a statewide vote by November 2006. [Link]
