The Town Farm

Before there were Social Security and welfare, there were poorhouses and town farms to house the indigent. These became especially necessary after the practice of auctioning off the poor ("vendue") was outlawed in the mid-19th century. Maine Poorhouse History will be of interest to any whose ancestors had trouble making ends meet.
