Master of a Dying Trade

Ashley Meeks has written a great article for the Ellsworth American about Eberhardt Felix Duschek — proprietor of The Clock Infirmary in Ellsworth.
The 40 clocks in for repair got there without advertising or a Web site, and they will return to their owners only after cash changes hands. The collection of clocks chime on their own schedule, over oldies coming from a radio tuned to AM 1370. Duschek, who can get along in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, makes no apologies about being computer illiterate. (When he emigrated from Germany, Duschek didn’t know a word of English. Today, all he lacks linguistically is a trace of an accent.)

Most of the money, he maintains, is in repairing — from a $10 battery-changing to overhauling (complete disassembly, ultrasound cleaning, repair, reassembly, lubrication) the kinds of antique clocks that are the staple of “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS. [Link]
