Closing the Loop

Last year, Alexandra and Garrett Conover of Willimantic snowshoed from Greenville to Allagash to commemorate their silver anniversary. This year, they'll be "closing the loop" with a 200-mile return trip.
The trip will begin on the Allagash River and continue to the West Branch of the Penobscot River before ending up on Moosehead Lake. They will haul their food and equipment, including a tent and a lightweight titanium wood stove, on toboggans.

The couple again will operate a Web site that will be updated with daily photographs and progress reports on the weather, wildlife sightings, ice thickness and other information. It will include a list of educational links and lesson plans for teachers ranging from Indian history to winter survival. [Link]
Visit the Winter Walk for the Wilds 2006 website to see a map of their route, and to follow their progress beginning January 14.
