Bar Harbor Expecting Royal Visitors

According to Harbor Master Charlie Phippen, the number of cruise ships pre-registered for Bar Harbor stops next season is off a bit from last year. But the number of passengers who disembark in 2006 may actually increase.

That's because the Queen Mary 2 — the world's longest, tallest and largest ocean liner — has signed up for three visits, and the Queen Elizabeth 2 is coming for the first time since 2003. The Queen Mary can carry 2,620 passengers and 1,253 crewmen, the QE2 up to 1,800 passengers and 1,004 crew.

Phippen says the number of reservations — which stood last week at 69 — should increase in weeks to come.
“We’re down slightly from last year, but there’s still enough time,” Mr. Phippen said. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be up in the mid-70s. I expect a couple more big ones and maybe five or six of the smaller ships that actually come right to the pier.” [Link]
