WWII Veteran Mailed a Piece of His Past

Philip Tomlinson of Caribou received a piece of his history in the mail last Thursday. As one of the men who put the aircraft carrier USS Essex into commission back in 1942, Tomlinson was entitled by Navy tradition to a piece of the flight deck when the ship was dismantled.
Tomlinson received a letter with his piece of wood listing the ship's 33 remaining plank owners.

"I knew there wasn't too many left," he said of his shipmates. "But after all, everybody has got to be over 80 years old." [Link]
The Essex was decommissioned to reserve in 1969, and stricken for disposal in 1973.
