Maine's Lost Ski Areas

Sunday River has rescheduled Opening Day for "late next week if Mother Nature delivers us the next cold snap she's promising." Here's a link to tide you over till then.

Before Sunday River and Sugarloaf became the mega-resorts they are today, skiers relied on their local ski areas—often no more than a hillside cleared of trees and a homemade rope tow. The New England Lost Ski Areas Project (NELSAP) has tracked down 72 small ski areas no longer operating in Maine. Photographs of several of these slopes are available on the website.

If you have memories of one of these areas—or know of one not on their list—NELSAP would love to hear from you.
