Maine Town Records Available on CD-ROM

Picton Press in Rockport is (in my opinion) the finest publisher of genealogical and historical books around. Their catalog includes dozens of Maine titles—from reprinted 19th-century town histories to recently-published genealogies. Their products are always of the highest quality.

Now Picton Press has digitized the town records of Maine towns and cities, and is offering them for sale on CD-ROM. For small towns the cost is generally $49.50; the records of larger municipalities may fill two or more disks. Some feature additional material: the records of Woolwich come as a three-CD set, which includes the town's history. Each CD comes with "a map of Maine showing the counties, a map of the county showing the location of the town/ city/ plantation, an introduction and bookmarks to sections in the original books."

All of the town records available on microfilm at the Maine State Archives have been digitized, saving researchers repeated trips to Augusta. Records will vary from town to town, but may include birth, death, and marriage records, minutes of town meetings, and accounts of official activities like laying out roads or settling boundary disputes.
