Maine Stamps

Several scenes of Maine have been immortalized on postage stamps over the years. Here are a few:
  • "The Great Head" at Bar Harbor was among the natural features included in the National Parks Issue of 1934. (A 60-cent Acadia stamp was issued in 2001.)
  • The 350th anniversary of shipbuilding on the Sagadahoc was commemorated with a 3-cent stamp in 1957.
  • A 6-cent commemorative was issued in 1969 featuring "Winter Sunday in Norway, Maine," and another in 1970 engraved with Edward Hopper's "The Lighthouse at Two Harbors, Maine."
  • A 1970 issue bearing the image of Portland Head Lighthouse commemorated the 150th anniversary of Maine's statehood.
  • The Stanley Steamer—invented by two brothers from Kingfield—appeared on a 1985 stamp.
  • The beacon at West Quoddy Head made it onto a 25-cent stamp in 1990.
