Chebeague Ready to Secede

Residents of Cumberland will vote next Tuesday on whether Great Chebeague Island should secede from the town.
Only the vote of islanders on Election Day will be the determining factor in whether the secession process will move forward. However, the council has scheduled an advisory vote on the mainland because if islanders indicate they want to break away, the Town Council must vote on the issue. [Link]
Great Chebeague is the largest island in Casco Bay, and has been a part of Cumberland since that town was set off from North Yarmouth in 1821. Nearby Long Island seceded from Portland in 1993, and includes most of Little Chebeague Island—connected to Great Chebeague by a sandbar at low tide.
