Were Brownies Born in Bangor?

The Maine Highlands Guild sells a mix called The Original Bangor Brownie, and supplies the following history:
Baking folklore holds that the very first brownie was baked in Bangor, Maine. In the early 1900s, a Bangor housewife was baking chocolate cake. When the cake collapsed the frugal housewife served it anyway, cut into squares, and the brownie was born. [Link]
The available evidence seems to prove otherwise. According to The Food Timeline, Fannie Farmer was concocting the chocolate treats as early as 1896.

Well, we can still claim Needhams and whoopie pies, right?
