Two Good Places to Grow Up

Waterville celebrated Friday being named one of The 100 Best Communities for Young People. Old Town made the list this year as well.

The recognition is given by the America's Progress Alliance, founded by General Colin Powell and chaired by his wife Alma. Winning communities can display the official "100 Best" seal, two representatives from each town are invited to attend a seminar and celebration in Washington, D. C., Nov. 2, and the Alliance "will also help each of the 100 winning communities celebrate their selection with a special 'Red Wagon Day', designed to honor their work to become a great place to grow up for their young people."

This isn't the first time Powell has recognized Waterville as a great place for kids: he once called the Alfond Youth Center the "finest youth center in the nation."
