Maine Tater Totals

The Maine Potato Board reports that the 2005 harvest is the smallest in modern history.

55,500 acres were planted this year—the smallest since 1888, when 56,000 acres were seeded. Potato Board director Don Flannery notes, though, that farmers are "getting attractive prices for their product."

The most popular varieties planted in recent years have been (in order of popularity) Russet Burbank, Frito-Lay, Shepody, Ontario, Superior, and Yukon Gold.
