Maine Among Smartest States

Morgan Quitno Press has announced the 2005 Smartest State Award. Vermont took top honors, but Maine was ranked fifth in the nation—up from eleventh last year. The increase may be due to the increased emphasis this year on student performance, rather than school spending.

Maine received a "Smart Rating" of 9.33, based on twenty-one factors ranging from class size to attendance records.

In other lists compiled this year by Morgan Quitno Press, Maine ranked as the third safest, the fifth healthiest, and the fifteenth most livable state.
