Lake Disappears Overnight

Sherman Lake, Newcastle (October), by Dan MitchellFlooding over the weekend has turned Sherman Lake in Newcastle back into a marsh.

The lake—measuring about 216 acres, and 16 feet at its deepest point—was created about 90 years ago when an earthen dam was contructed along Route 1. That dam was breached during the overnight hours of Oct. 9, allowing most of the lake's water to drain into the Marsh River [view map].
