Say Goodbye to T8 SD

Residents of T8 SD in Hancock County now have a new address: Fletcher's Landing Township (the law changing the name leaves off the apostrophe). The township is so small they celebrated the name-change on Sunday in nearby Eastbrook.

The former, rather prosaic name "Township 8 Southern Division" marked it as one of the Lottery Townships (other townships in this division became the towns of Hancock, Franklin, Cherryfield, Columbia, and Columbia Falls). In 1786, 2,720 tickets were sold at £60 each, entitling the bearers to anywhere from half a mile square to a full township of land east of the Penobscot River. William Bingham of Philadelphia bought up many of the prize lots—which explains why several of the unorganized townships in Washington County are denoted "BPP," or "Bingham's Penobscot Purchase."
