Maine in 3D

John T. McCutcheon: Couple looking at stereographsDavid L. Spahr of Washington, Maine, is the proprietor of—a website devoted to antique stereographic images. The site features nearly 50 Maine stereoscopic images, including one of the aftermath of Portland's Great Fire of 1866. Spahr also includes instructions for "freeviewing"—a skill every kid with a Magic Eye book has mastered, but many adults dismiss as a physical impossibility.

The best online source for stereographic pictures of Maine is the NYPL Digital Gallery, which includes the Robert N. Dennis Collection of Stereoscopic Views. Every county in Maine is well represented in the collection, with 86 images of Portland alone.
