It's Hard to Keep Organized

The October issue of Down East includes an article by Jeff Clark titled "Unorganized Territory: Why are so many Maine towns choosing to disappear?" [currently their website's featured article]. Maine has lost four towns and plantations since 1987 (Benedicta, Greenfield, Madrid, and Centerville), and fourteen others have considered deorganization.

A measure was proposed to the Legislature in 1999 that would have created "the largest town in the world" by consolidating the state's unorganized territory into a single municipality. Not surprisingly, nothing came of it.
