Stonington Man Sired Six Sets of Twins
Harry Fifield of Stonington and wife Lydia Benson raised 17 children in Connecticut, including six sets of twins. A photo of the family appeared in the September 1938 issue of National Geographic, and they were declared the "World's Champion Twin Family" at the 1939 World's Fair in New York.
The large family attracted local and national media attention regularly. One set of twins—Claire and sister Della—died recently, just 11 days apart. Eight of their siblings survive.
Local newspapers began keeping track of Fifield arrivals after the third set of twins was born. Family events were heralded with headlines such as “Truck Load of Gifts Delivered At Home of Fifield Children” and “Wife of WPA Roadworker Gives Birth to Sixth Set of Twins.” [Link]
