Reconstructing Maine's First Ship
Maine's First Ship aims to build a replica of the first vessel constructed in Maine—the Virginia, built at the Popham Colony in 1607-08.
Maine's First Ship will build the pinnace VIRGINIA, a reconstruction of the first English ship built in North America, to celebrate and honor the beginning of Maine's 400-year-old shipbuilding tradition at Popham Colony in 1607. Future operations on the Kennebec River and along the Maine coast will enable people to experience and learn about life, sailing and shipbuilding in 1607.
