Shaker Village to Be Protected
The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester will be protected and get some much-needed repairs thanks to a deal recently worked out.
The Shakers sold their rights to develop the property as part of a $3.5 million deal intended to help sustain the last active Shaker community and a National Historic Landmark.
A group of conservation and preservation organizations raised the money to buy the conservation easement and endow a fund for the care of the land and buildings. Private fundraising continues for the last $200,000 for the endowment, but the conservation deal is complete.
The Shakers will still own and manage the property, which includes 19 historic structures and landscape, wildlife habitat, trails, and productive farmland and woodland. [Link]
