Petroglyphs Threatened

Deirdre Fleming writes today about the ancient petroglyphs at Machias Bay—"the largest known site on the East Coast."
[Donald] Soctomah, the tribe's historic preservation officer, and Francis had come to Machiasport this day to explain Picture Rock's tale of caribou, hunters, shamans and deer captured in petroglyphs. The pair spoke about the history, the meaning and the crisis at this coastal treasure recently reclaimed by the Passamaquoddy.

The artwork, in places, is older than the pyramids. It also is threatened. [Link]
The piece includes a slideshow with closeups of the carvings.
