Maine Huts & Trails
The Western Mountains Foundation is planning a 180-mile trail from Moosehead Lake to the Mahoosuc Range, with huts positioned at "comfortable distances." The entire project should take five to ten years to complete, with work to commence on three huts near Flagstaff Lake in 2007.
The idea of the trail system is to provide people-powered recreation, stimulate the economy via eco-tourism in a sluggish section of the Pine Tree State and create conservation ethics.
The dozen huts will be about 12 miles apart with sites on ponds, lakes, rivers and in the foothills. They are modeled after Maine's traditional sporting camps with a main building with attached porch that houses the kitchen, dining area, meeting room and staff quarters with two or three separate bunkhouses for guests connected by walkways. The huts would house up to 42 guests and four staff. [Link]
