Write-In Candidate Wins Re-Election
Whizzer Wheeler stepped down as a Waterford selectman this summer, and did not campaign prior to last week's election. He won nonetheless, after 117 voters wrote in his name.
According to Wheeler, he had not planned to return to the selectman's seat, but was approached by a resident who asked if Wheeler would mind if he posted signs urging voters to write in his name.
"He put up five signs on Labor Day. Within eight hours, all five were stolen," Wheeler said. "The guy who put them out lost five good sawhorses. He's mad as hell and would like to have them back."
Nevertheless, new signs were posted, including one in the Waterford flat. As the election results show, the campaign worked well. [Link]
