The Bethel Journals

The Bethel Journals is a new website chronicling that Western Maine town's history from 1886 on with maps, photographs, and extracts from town reports and local newspapers. (You may have trouble viewing some pages in anything but Internet Explorer.) Subjects so far range from Bethel's water system to its old corn-canning factory to the "lock-ups" built in Bethel and nearby Gilead.
The lock-up was built and on July 3, 1891 the news was that “the lock up is all ready for those who want a room.”

And on July 3, 1891, the lock-up gets its first user:

“The lock-up was christened last Saturday by Herbert Cole but by Monday a.m. the window was up showing the bird had flown.”
