Red Tide Returns

The toxic algae bloom known as "red tide" has returned to Maine. The Department of Marine Resources closed an area near Harpswell from Dickson Point to West Cundy Point to shellfish harvesting last week. A new rule released this afternoon widens the ban.
Effective immediately, because of paralytic shellfish poisoning, it shall be unlawful to dig, take or possess any mussels, carnivorous snails, European oysters and Surf/Hen clams from all shores, flats and waters inside a line beginning at the Maine/New Hampshire border and extending south to the limits of the U.S. jurisdiction AND a line beginning at Marshall Point, Port Clyde and extending south to the limits of the U.S. jurisdiction.
