The Week Maine Burned

The rash of woods and brush fires in southern Maine yesterday (and the smell of smoke on the wind last evening) sent me looking for websites on Maine's 1947 fire season—immortalized in Joyce Butler's classic Wildfire Loose: The Week Maine Burned.

  • aroundmaine.com has an online presentation based on Butler's book, with some extra details here.
  • The Waterboro Public Library tells of that town's ordeal, and of the "miraculous" back draft that saved North Waterboro.
  • Students from Bates College were pressed into duty. Three graduates tell their stories.
  • Acadia National Park was especially hard hit, as the NPS website explains. See also this page from Acadia.net.
