An Island Garden

Bookpaths today celebrates Celia Thaxter's 1894 book An Island Garden, and points the way to an excellent online edition.

Thaxter's father was lighthouse keeper on White Island—one of the Isles of Shoals—but later moved to nearby Appledore, where Celia kept her garden.
Thaxter describes in detail what she grew there within sight of the sea, her descriptions complemented by Childe Hassam’s “pictures and illuminations.” And, she does instruct, gently taking readers through a garden’s season, from winter planning, to spring labor, to summer profusion, to the last fall blooms. Celia Thaxter's island garden was reconstructed in 1977 according to her plans, and tours are available each Wednesday June through August.
