Chebeague Island to Become a Town

It's official: On July 1, 2007, Chebeague Island will become Maine's newest town. The governor signed a bill yesterday allowing the island to secede from the town of Cumberland.

Senator Karl Turner, R-Cumberland, was the only lawmaker to speak against the bill, warning that Chebeague could become a "property tax haven for the wealthy." But island resident Donna Damon says that his concerns are unfounded.
She said the islanders will work hard to make sure Chebeague doesn't become an exclusive summer resort. "We will not let that happen. It's in our power." [Link]
