Machiasport Girl's Generosity Rewarded

Machiasport third-grader Samantha McGovern had a birthday party January 9th, but asked her friends not to bring presents. Instead, they were asked to bring flashlights for women and children at The Next Step domestic abuse shelter in Machias.

On Monday, Samantha's generous act was recognized. An anonymous letter arrived by way of the Washington County Sheriff's Office offering praise for her donation, and two $50 Wal-Mart gift cards: one to buy something for her, the other to buy more flashlights "for those in need of a helping hand and the means to light their way."
Reached at her home later Monday, McGovern said that she recently had been thinking about how she could get more flashlights to those in need.

"I thought when I have more money, I could get them more flashlights," she said.

Overall, she said, she found the letter "pretty cool." She hopes she and her mother can make a trip to Wal-Mart as soon as the weekend. [Link]
