Free Statues Offensive to Art Czars

Sea Dogs owner Daniel Burke wants to donate a set of bronze statues to be displayed at Hadlock Field. But members of Portland's Public Art Committee say the family depicted isn't quite ethnic enough.
Jack Soley, committee vice chairman, said the committee would have steered Burke away from a design that features "white folks on pedestals" because Portland has enough of those, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in Longfellow Square and film director John Ford at Gorham's Corner.
Burke's lawyer says take it or leave it.
"There can be no changes," William Troubh said Tuesday. "This is not a holiday gift you can go and exchange. If the city sees fit, in its wisdom, to accept it, so be it." [Link]
The only sensible thing to do is to tear down the Longfellow and Ford statues so the ethnic balance in Portland's statuary can be maintained.
