Chebeague's Secession Success

The State and Local Government Committee has voted 11-0 in support of a bill allowing Chebeague Island to secede from Cumberland on July 1, 2007. The issue now goes to the full House and Senate.
On the mainland, Cumberland's town council voted last month to adopt an agreement it forged with Great Chebeague and other islands to secede. Chebeague would also leave School Administrative District 51. [Link]
Peaks Island—now part of Portland—is watching Chebeague's move toward independence carefully, contemplating its own secession bid.
