Apologize or Pay Up

The Smoking Gun reported in 2001 that the Lewiston PD would forgive certain parking offenses, so long as the offender apologized.
The Lewiston, Maine police sure are a swell bunch of guys. If a motorist is cited for parking at an expired meter, for example, they'll tear the ticket up if the recipient simply writes a letter of apology (drivers can take advantage of this waiver only once a year). As you can see from this sampling of letters sent to Lewiston cops over the past few months, frugal Yankees seem to like this policy. Of course, since these parking tickets only set you back $5, it appears most motorists can't be bothered with the mea culpa. [Link]
