The Queen of Paper Bags

Margaret Knight—born Feb. 14, 1838, in York—invented a machine to manufacture folding flat-bottomed paper bags in 1868, and two years later was the first woman to receive a patent. Her 1879 patent model is now in the Smithsonian. Knight later in life patented inventions related to the rotary motor. She made her home at Curry Cottage in Framingham, Massachusetts, from 1889 until her death in 1914.
