A Maine Paralympian

He's 65 years old, has eight grandchildren, and is confined to a wheelchair. And he has a shot at winning gold at Turin, Italy, next month.

Wes Smith of Glenburn is a member of the Belfast Curling Club, and is one of five curlers selected to compete for the U.S. in the upcoming Paralympics. Another member of the team, Danell Libby, used to live in Gray.
Even though his team is seeded sixth in a field of eight, Smith is optimistic.

"We have the strongest team the United States has ever put together in international play," said the 65-year-old Smith. "If we play up to our potential, we definitely have a chance. If we play to our potential, we could take the gold." [Link]
