The Ice Finally Cometh

According to records kept since 1952, Thursday marked the latest ice-in date for Lake Auburn. Auburn Water District spokeswoman Mary Jane Dillingham had predicted the day before that our recent cold snap would finally ice over the entire lake.
The lake, the source of drinking water for the cities of Auburn and Lewiston, was about 90 percent frozen over as of Jan. 24. Dillingham says that will probably be the date she uses for this year's official ice report, but added that she'll probably put an asterisk next to the date to note that a full freeze-up didn't occur until [Thursday]. Snowmobilers all across Androscoggin County decided to head straight for the recently iced-over lake to attempt qualifying runs for the 2006 Darwin Awards.

Peace,

Tor
