Portland Smells

Portland has its own certified municipal sniffer, charged with detecting violations of the city's odor ordinance. Her name is Sarah Hopkins, "who (between sniffs) serves as development review manager for Portland's planning department."
So why Portland's sudden interest in all things olfactory?

Because Maine's largest city is awash in odors, that's why. There's the chicken frying down at Barber Foods, the beans baking over at Burnham & Morrill, the fish filleting at Cozy Harbor Seafood, the hops cooking at Shipyard Brewing, the coffee roasting at Coffee by Design . . . and, of course, all of it eventually converging down at the Portland Water District's sewage treatment plant.
