Mutant Lobster in Sorrento

A one-of-a-kind lobster arrived recently at Sorrento Lobster Inc. from New Brunswick. Each side of the crustacean is a different color—"mottled blue and greenish brown"—and it has both sets of sex organs. Company manager Rick Freeman says, "I've seen every color in the rainbow: bright red, blue, black, bright yellow, white and even lobsters striped like tigers, but this is really unusual."
To Freeman’s 5-year-old granddaughter, Gwynn Ash of Franklin, the lobster is a pet she visits every chance she gets.

“She’s constantly reminding me to say ‘hello’ when she can’t do so herself,” he said. “She’s fascinated by it. In the eyes of a 5-year-old, it’s like having a dragon.”

Freeman decided to keep the lobster to show his granddaughter its unusual coloring. It was John Murphy, the lobster pound’s mechanic, who first noticed the lobster’s anatomical abnormalities.

“I was looking at the colors of its shell and turned it over and thought that’s not right,” Murphy said. [Link]
