Maine Philanthropist Dies

Dorothy "Bibby" Alfond died Saturday at age 89. She was the wife of Dexter Shoe Co. founder Harold Alfond, and with him gave away a large part of their fortune. She was the daughter of William Levine, owner of Levine's clothing store in Waterville.

Even if you didn't know the woman, you'll recognize the name. The campus of the Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers in Waterville is named for her, and the Youth Center in Waterville and athletic facilities at Colby College, Thomas College, St. Joseph's College, the University of Maine, Maine Maritime Academy, and at Kents Hill School all bear the Alfond name. Good Will-Hinckley has a Harold & Bibby Alfond Middle School.
