Frank Fixaris Dies in Fire

Frank Fixaris — a Portland sportscaster for forty decades — died in a fire at his home Friday.
Falmouth Fire Chief Cameron Martin said the fire in the home's first-floor family room was accidental. "It appears that a cigarette was left burning on an ashtray and fell onto the couch," Martin said. [Link]
Fixaris was sports director for WGAN-TV (now WGME) for thirty years. Ironically, he narrowly escaped death in a 1960 house fire in Windham, which claimed the life of his roommate and left Fixaris in the hospital with burns for months.
