The Bagaduce Music Lending Library

The Bagaduce Music Lending Library was founded by Mary Cheney Gould, Marcia Chapman, and Fritz Jahoda—a former conductor of the Vienna State Opera—in 1983. Since then, the Blue Hill library has grown into "an international resource center for printed sheet music and scores, housing numerous collections of music representing all genres of written music except marching band music."

Any of the more than 200,000 titles in the catalog may be borrowed for the price of a $10 membership fee and a modest lending fee.

The website's Advanced Search interface is incredible, allowing users to search by composer, title, lyricist, arranger, editor, publisher, and copyright date, as well as category of instrument ("Strings Plucked") and subject ("Anatomical: Eyes, lips, hearts, dreams..."). There's also a special search field labeled "Music relating to a Maine Town," which taps into the library's extensive collection of Maine-themed compositions.
