Maine Blackfly Breeders Association

A generous bunch of Mainers calling themselves the Maine Blackfly Breeders Association are raising money for good causes Downeast by exploiting Maine's unofficial state insect.

They've raised $16,000 through AIDS awareness walks in the past ten years, and since formalizing their nonprofit status in 2000 have dispensed more than $11,000 to local charities.
"It's really amazing," said Holly Garner-Jackson, a black fly enthusiast who runs the Woodwind Gallery and Custom Framing shop in Machias, which serves as the black fly group's official international headquarters.

"We generally give $200 at a time, which isn't a lot. But when you add it all up, it does go a long way. It just feels good to know that we're helping the community. The word gets around." [Link]
Their catalog includes a host of unique items, the "ultimate" of which is the "Blackfly Swarm Dome" — a disturbing re-interpretation of the snow globe. And be sure to check out the lyrics to the "Maine Blackfly Breeders Association Song" by Zara Dowling:
Chorus:
And the blackfly, the little blackfly,
Always the blackfly, that's got to be the way.
I'll die with the blackfly picking my bones,
Thanks to the M-B-B-A. [Link]

The catalog link is incorrect; it uses .com but it should be .org:

Thanks! They must have changed domains in the last couple of years. I've changed the links.
