The Lowdown on Tip-Ups

Marc Gilbert at Fish Head described a few "tip-up" designs yesterday. All of the models mentioned improve upon the homemade traps I remember from my youth.

The tip-up — for those who've never frozen their extremities ice-fishing — is a device that sits over a hole augered in the ice, from which a baited line is suspended. When a fish strikes, a flag pops up to alert the fisherman. The rules in Maine allow as many as five traps per person.

Check out Gilbert's December archive for more posts on ice-fishing.
