Diabetes a Growing Problem in Maine

Figures from the CDC show that the rate of diabetes diagnoses in Maine has more than doubled — from 3.4 percent of adult Mainers in 1994 to 7.6 percent in 2004.
All told, the CDC estimates that more than 100-thousand Mainers have diabetes, but one-third of that population is unaware they have the disease.

Jim Leonard is director of Maine's Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. He says the bad news is that diabetes has no cure but the goods news is that most people can control the disease through diet and exercise. [Link]
