Maine's Most Gruesome Crime?

Strange Maine discussed Monday the Purinton Massacre — perhaps the most horrific crime ever committed in Maine. In the early morning hours of July 9, 1806, Capt. James Purinton (often spelled Purington) of Augusta butchered his wife and six of their children and fatally wounded a seventh before taking his own life. It was said that he had lately "felt much distressed at the unpromising appearance of his farm."

There is a more grusome crime that occurred much later in Maine that I learned of when I worked at the Morning Sentinel. I'll try to find it and post the story.
