Maine From the Air

Before Google Earth and Google Local started offering free satellite imagery, most of us had to rely on aerial photography to gain a bird's-eye view of our homes. Here in Maine, we were lucky enough to have Aerial Photography of Maine from the Maine Office of GIS.

The interface is a bit clumsy, and the photographs are slow to load, but pictures are available of every inhabited town and township in Maine (some remote portions of Aroostook, Somerset, and Piscataquis Counties are omitted). With a little perseverence, you should indeed be able to see your house from here.

Aerial Photographs of Coastal Maine are available from the Maine Department of Marine Resources. The photographs were created as part of a "coast-wide eelgrass mapping project," but are now part of a site "developed to provide a planning and response tool for Maine and New Hampshire coastal spill responders." Some of these photos could be mistaken for works of art. The image below is of Pond Island, part of the town of Milbridge in Washington County.
