Devonsquare Founder Dead

Herb Ludwig, tenor and founder of the Maine folk-rock mainstay Devonsquare, died Tuesday in Portland. He was 58.

Ludwig founded Devonsquare with Steve Romanoff and Jeff Rice when they were seniors at Cheverus High School (the settled lineup included Tom Dean and Alana MacDonald). He went on to record five albums with the group, and in his spare time was an attorney in South Portland.

Devonsquare gave birth in 1975 to Maine's other great folk group, Schooner Fare, when brothers Steve and Chuck Romanoff and Tom Rowe departed. The two groups have been reuniting annually for a concert to benefit the Jack McPhillips Memorial Fund.
